Sports injuries
From court to fairway to the track, every sport asks something different of your feet. Here’s what causes injury in each sport, the problems we commonly see, how we can help, and what you can do to stay injury free.
Why Sports Injuries Happen
Whether you’re on the court, the field, the track or the fairway, sport asks a lot of your feet and lower limbs. Every jump, sprint, pivot and landing sends force, often several times your body weight, through your feet, ankles, knees and hips. Most sports injuries fall into two groups: sudden (acute) injuries like a rolled ankle or a strained muscle, and gradual (overuse) injuries that build up over time from repetitive load, such as tendon pain or stress fractures. Factors like your foot structure, footwear, training load, technique and how quickly you increase your activity all influence your risk. The good news is that with the right assessment and guidance, most sports injuries can be treated effectively, and many can be prevented altogether.
Conditions We Commonly See
Across the sports we treat, some injuries come up again and again.
These include:
- Ankle sprains and instability
- Achilles tendinopathy and calf strains
- Plantar fasciitis and heel pain
- Shin splints
- Stress fractures of the foot and lower leg
- Tendon injuries around the foot and ankle
- Forefoot and big toe problems
- Knee related pain linked to foot and lower limb function
Every one of these presents differently depending on your sport, your body and your goals, which is why we assess each person individually rather than applying a one size fits all approach.
How We Can Help
Your care begins with an initial consultation, where we take the time to understand your pain: when it started, what brings it on, and how it’s affecting your sport and daily life. From there we carry out a thorough biomechanical assessment, looking at how your feet, ankles, knees and hips move and load together. We perform a gait analysis to see exactly where pressure builds through your foot as you move, helping us pinpoint the source of the problem rather than just treating the symptom. We also complete a footwear assessment to check whether your current shoes are helping or hindering you and we discuss your level of involvement in your sport. This includes how often you play, your training load, and your goals. With that full picture, we build a personalised treatment plan tailored to you, which may include hands-on therapy, strengthening and mobility work, footwear guidance, taping, and custom orthotics where they’ll genuinely help.
Prevention And Staying Injury Free
Preventing injury is always better than treating one. Simple habits make a real difference: warming up properly before activity, building strength and mobility in your feet, ankles and calves, and increasing your training load gradually rather than in sudden jumps. Wearing footwear suited to your sport and replacing it before it wears out, protects you from a surprising number of problems. Just as importantly, listen to your body: early niggles are far easier to settle than established injuries, so it’s worth getting persistent or worsening pain checked before it sidelines you. We’re always happy to help you stay active and injury free, not just recover when something goes wrong.
